As I write this, I sit in my childhood bedroom at a card table, my makeshift desk. This is not where I expected to be on this gray first day of April. I will not go into great detail about how I got here; if you are a student, it is likely that your story is the same as mine: you left school for spring break, looking forward to a week at home with family and friends. Midweek, the coronavirus outbreak reached a fever pitch, and schools, businesses, and public buildings closed one after another. Cancellations and layoffs spread like their own kind of virus.
I am luckier than most because my parents and I are able to work from home. But I feel helpless as I watch unemployment rates climb toward 30 percent. I feel sick when I think about how many Americans are unable to make rent and mortgage payments today. I feel cold when I think about how many people will die because of lack of health insurance and shortages of medical supplies like ventilators and PPE. This is not an easy time for anyone. Our community is lonelier than it has ever been, and we are all mourning something, whether it be a graduation ceremony, a study abraod trip, or the loss of a loved one. Instead of feeling helpless, we can do what we can where we are and know that it's enough. What I can do is write create this blog as a way for Campus Ministry to reach out to the Aquinas community.
